WIndows to the soul

He looked into her eyes, searching for the answer that had to be there. Her lips remained quiet to his question, but her eyes spoke words. He searched for the love he knew was there. He searched for the "yes" that her body was screaming at him.

But she remained silent. No words came forth from her lips. He just stared at her. He couldn't believe she was being this way. He knew she loved him so. All she had to do was open her lips and speak the answer that her body screamed at him, and he would stay.

Still she was silent. He looked away, he couldn't take the silence anymore. By her silence, the responding "No" echoed through the room, stealing away all of his heat. All she had to do was open her lips. He looked back at her. Her eyes were closed now. She couldn't stand the pain she caused him. He couldn't take it anymore.

He stood, gathering his clothes and got dressed - the whole time he was silently pleading with her to speak. All she had to do was say anything and he would stop. He would sit down and stay. He would apologize, take back the question asked. He would return to the way things were, all she had to do was open her mouth.

Fully dressed, he could no longer put it off anymore. He looked back at her in the bed. She was in a fetal position facing away from him. He no longer existed for her. Seeing the dismal for what it was, he turned and silently left. Forever.

He never saw the river of tears streaming down her face as he left. He never knew the hurt that he left in her heart. He never knew the anguish she felt with him leaving, he would never know how alone she was.

And still she couldn't speak.
